Antigone Concept Statement

Sophocles wrote Antigone during the expansion of Athens and probably the first of the three theban plays (Braun). It is also one of the oldest feminist plays exploring the strengths and weaknesses of stereotypical feminine and masculine  morals. What is morally correct? The exploration of these themes are done often in the Chorus who yearn for those around them to become wise, but mostly by the actions of Creon and Antigone following their hearts that are tainted with pride. Still despite their internal struggles the question remains what is right? As this play will seemingly take place on a set that resembles Capitol Hill the audience will be asked to think about current events and how this story relates to their everyday lives. It will also ask them to evaluate gender in relation to power and morals. To support these concepts my lighting design will convey this struggle by using shadows to emphasize the size of the characters based on how they feel and how big they believe themselves to be. It will also create isolation to mimic the separation and alienation characters experience throughout the play. The texture will allow for separation and tension; it will consist of sharp angles that increase hard shadows assisting the characters in their decisive and strong willed characteristics. The lighting will be a tool for division and will assist with demonstrating struggle and power.
